Om Satyam: The Mantra of a Thousand Blessings

By connecting with the Supreme Truth, expressed in Om Satyam Param Dhimahi, all challenges melt away. When the Truth begins to be born in us, we will begin to feel freedom from all limitations, known and unknown. The scripture reads, “And the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32) As soon as the truth is born in us, we receive freedom, spiritual wealth and divine grace. As a result, we move through life gracefully and smoothly. Om Satyam Param Dhimahi is the Divine Truth presented in the form of sound. It means “Let us all meditate on that one Supreme Truth”. Indeed, let us meditate on the highest truth, the principle of absolute good, and the cause of all. We need to realize that the goal of life is for each one of us to search for the truth. It is in the truth, that we will find freedom from all the challenges of life. It is important for us to keep in mind that our freedom depends upon the extent to which we are in touch with the truth. Our challenges and limitations are an indicator of the degree to which we are not in touch with the truth.

Let us take a closer look at this mantra and begin to connect with its deeper and infinitely rewarding meaning. The words Satyam Param indicate that one should search for the Absolute Truth, not the relative truth. Indeed, by surrendering to the Supreme Truth, and not to the relative truth, we gain light, grace and protection. Furthermore, we should not confuse the relative truth with the Supreme and Absolute Truth. We must look beyond the outer appearance of things. The Supreme and Absolute Truth is the source of all power. By worshiping anything other than the Absolute Truth, we gain blessings that are limited and temporary. We must have reverence for the Supreme and Absolute Truth, because it is the principle at the root of all general and particular powers. Worshiping the signs and symbols of power, rather than the Divine source, is an inferior form of spiritual practice. There is one principle in nature which is absolute, that which is inferior must obey that which is superior. However great our success may be in leaning upon relative truths, it cannot surpass the powerful effectiveness of meditating on the Supreme and Absolute Truth.

Nothing is more real than the truth. Everything in the universe is moving toward the Truth. Again, our challenges are only a sign we have distanced ourselves from the Truth. We are challenged to correct the course of our lives and be reminded that we are born to manifest Divine Truth. The Word of God is Truth. As soon as we bring Truth into our soul we will gain the freedom we are looking for. Freedom has always been, is now, and will always be, an aspiration of the human mind, heart, soul, spirit. Vibrating Om Satyam Param Dhimahi causes absolute purity, absolute light, absolute truth and freedom to be the ideal of our soul. This powerful mantric vibration provides a direct connection to the Supreme Lord. By vibrating Om Satyam Param Dhimahi we are surrendering unto God, so as to receive blessings, protection and grace. This grace and protection is beyond what we can receive from anything that is impermanent. The law of truth shall always give us power over matter. We cannot forsake the Supreme Truth, in favor of lesser knowledge and power. By meditating on the Supreme Truth, we are establishing a relationship with the power responsible for sustaining the universe so that we may be supported and protected. By meditating on the Supreme Truth, we will be enlightened by the superior light of the Divine. Every living being, therefore, must search for permanent happiness, not temporary happiness. This material world is impermanent, and anything other than spiritual Truth is impermanent. The blessings that come from anything that is impermanent are also impermanent. Therefore, we must lean upon the Supreme Being for only He is eternal.

Meditating with Om Satyam Param Dhimahi is a contemplation of the source of Light, which is the basis of the cosmic, solar and planetary spheres. It is a contemplation of the Truth beyond. Truth means a lifting of the veil between you and a higher understanding. Vibrating Om Satyam Param Dhimahi is a request to be illuminated and infused with the light of spiritual knowledge, just as the Sun lights up the cosmos. The Sun is Lumen de Lumine, the Light of lights, the God of gods, the supreme deity of the Vedas, the Divine power in heaven, which operates on Earth as fire, in atmosphere as lightning, as the major manifestations of light in our visible world. Every human being is a bright ray of the central Sun of consciousness that illumines the entire world. The Vedas reveal that we are children of light, children of the Sun born on Earth to carry forward the Divine light of truth. Above all, Om Satyam Param Dhimahi is the incarnation of the Light of the Creator in the sound current.

Om Satyam Param Dhimahi, is a bija mantra that is found in the Srimad Bhagavatam, one of the eighteen Puranas, also known as the Bhagavata Purana. It is considered to be the essence of all the Vedas. The Srimad Bhagavatam is not the Bhagavad Gita; rather, it is considered by yogis to be an advanced form of the Bhagavad Gita. The Srimad Bhagavatam guides us to meditate on that Supreme Truth (Om Satyam Param Dhimahi), which is the cause of creation, sustenance and destruction of this world, but (Itself) does not undergo any change throughout time and is not subject to destruction. The entire scripture of the Srimad Bhagavatam calls upon us to meditate on that one Supreme and Absolute Truth by vibrating Naam. The first verse of the Srimad Bhagavatam begins and ends with the words:

                    Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya [...] satyam param dhimahi

Through these two lines, we gain access to the totality of the wisdom contained within the Srimad Bhagavatum. Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya translates as “Thy Will Be Done” and professes complete surrender of the individual to the Divine. This powerful mantra creatively defeats dark forces and restores love, faith, hope, justice, freedom and happiness. It is a Vishnu mantra, a Krishna or Christ mantra, and above all a mantra of liberation and a spiritual formula for attaining freedom. Interestingly, most Shakti Naam Yoga classes begin with the recitation of this mantra. Vibrating Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya generates within us higher energy, pure consciousness, and high vibrational frequency. It activates all our spiritual centers, and causes healing energy to freely move throughout our body in order to heal mental, emotional and physical proiblems. Vibrating Om Namo Bhagavate helps us to understand God’s Truth and align ourselves with our own knowing. Om Namo Bhagavate activates the pattern of salvation that is buried in every single human being. It has the power to release us from all our past mistakes. It leads us beyond our limitations.   

On the other hand, the mantra Om Satyam Param Dhimahi is the catalyst for our awakening and rebirth within this present incarnation. Our soul is a segment of the eternal soul of the universe, sent here to experience mundane things, that through experience we may unfold in the wisdom of the ages and thus prove ourselves worthy of expansion in comprehension of the parent soul of whom we are a part. By vibrating Om Satyam Param Dhimahi, we are calling our soul. We are calling upon the divine wholeness. God has planted in the hearts of men and women a spark, a seed, and a model of perfection and splendor. Om Satyam Param Dhimahi allows us to purify ourselves so that we may become one with that model. We must acknowledge the divine origin of humankind, and connect with the divine spark within, so that we may embrace our true spiritual essence, and experience true happiness. We are made in the image and likeness of God. In each of us, the seed that is the image of our Heavenly Father's perfection is asleep. This seed is engraved with the indestructible blueprint of divinity, but it needs a lofty ideal to nourish, strengthen and stimulate its growth. Om Satyam Param Dhimahi patiently feeds and waters this divine seed, and our sacred spirituality grows purer and purer, and we come closer and closer to perfection as God intended for us. This divine seed provides us with a higher mission to unite us with that perfection. In the course of time, we will be more and more like God, because we will possess the divine attributes in their fullness, as did Adam in the Garden of Eden, allowing us to communicate with God at free will. To be enlightened means to be able to see the unseen and know the unknown. God cannot be understood by the individual soul through intellectual exercises. It is by the grace of God that the individual soul is enlightened.

Om Satyam Param Dhimah causes us to merge with the spiritual reality of the Sun, honoring the sacred presence and higher spirit behind it. The Sun is the visible representation of Divinity, and the great symbol of the Self, spirit or Divine presence in the world corresponding to our Atman. Vibrating Om Satyam Param Dhimahi, allows us to cultivate the light within us, so as to manifest the universal light of consciousness, and regain the solar aspect of our being. Vibrating Om Satyam Param Dhimahi allows us to connect with the inner divine light behind the great illuminating power of the Sun. Sound is not only the mother of light, but also, we can use the Sun to energize all mantras. That is why yogis and mystics focus on the Sun during their spiritual practice. We should always keep in mind that, the solar energy is the root of all mantras. Chanting mantras in the sunlight, offering the mantras to the Sun, is one of the most powerful yogic practices. The Sun is the most powerful force for energizing all yoga practices. The Sun is both the external and internal source of energy, reflecting the supreme light of yoga that is reflected in our own hearts and in the outer world. The Sun is the ruler of our solar system and all that occurs within it. It is the most powerful influence in nature, responsible for the light that nourishes all life on Earth, and sustains the force of gravity through which our Earth revolves. Om Satyam Param Dhimahi is one of the highest of bija mantras said to carry the power of the Sun. By meditating upon the Sun and vibrating Om Satyam Param Dimahi, we are practicing the yoga of light. This is a way to merge with and bring out the Sun of our own true Self that is hidden in the darkness of the material world, and especially in our body of pain.

The best times to vibrate Naam are during the hours of sunrise and sunset, at noon and on Sundays. Begin by sitting quietly and facing the East. Now, visualize sunlight in the center of your forehead. As you chant this mantric vibration, visualize the Light entering your being, filling you and overflowing into your surroundings. Chant Om Satyam Param Dhimahi in a state of devotion, petitioning for grace and protection. Chanting this mantra removes fear and grants courage to overcome anything. By chanting Om Satyam Param Dhimahi one gains the spiritual strength found within the mantra itself. It enables one to develop advanced intellect and strengthens our intuitive power. It gives love, faith, hope, health, self-confidence, vitality and mental peace. Vibrating Om Satyam Param Dhimahi will cause us to have a life filled with light and goodness.

                        DHIMAHI = WE MEDITATE

Om Satyam Param Dhimahi means, "We contemplate the truth beyond”. Om Satyam activates the spark of light within us that left the original state of pure nothingness to enter into evolution and gain self-knowledge and self-realization. Every single particle in existence has within it a particle of that non-existence, the Absolute. At the end of the cosmic day, all of those particles will be reabsorbed into that state of nothingness. Our real self, our ultimate nature, is Emptiness, the Absolute, the Ain Soph, or Shunya.   It is the ultimate nature of everything. It is the fundamental base of all existence. It is a state of pure potentiality, a state of pure happiness, and is absolutely free from conditioning.  This is a level of pure love, pure light, pure peace, pure joy, pure happiness, and pure being. It is life unconditioned by any restriction. It is the purest bliss and the purest interconnectedness of all things. It is a state so elevated, so beautiful and so sublime that it is incommunicable. It is beyond description. It has to be experienced to be understood. It is that which we have always been longing for throughout all of our millions of incarnations. It is where we came from and where we long to return. It is our true nature.

For at the beginning of time, when God created all souls, we were created with our own energy, our own unique purpose, and our own unique task. The spark of our soul emanated from the Absolute, from the emptiness, from the divine, and went through millions of years of evolution. As a result, we lost our identity and we forgot who we truly are. We have become identified with each body that has been given to us incarnation after incarnation. We are not the car we drive and the clothes we wear. They are not and will never be, who we really are. They are a collection of false beliefs. We forget that we will change these clothes for another set of clothes. We are more than our parents, more than our friends, and more than the circumstances of our life. We are more than our past lives. Our soul has been shaped by the past incarnations that we have lived. For each fresh incarnation that a soul creates, the spirit is sent to the Earth as a combination of karma achieved, karma to be achieved, relationships that have been resolved, relationships that are to be concluded, lifetimes known, and lifetimes that are purposely forgotten.

Our true nature, our pure essence lies deep within us, inside every particle of our Being. It is this seed that has been evolving throughout all the cycles of nature for millions of years to acquire knowledge and to finally acquire this precious resource of a human body so as to have the potential to realize its true nature, which is not of an animal nature. Our true nature relates to where that spark originally came from before it entered into evolution millions of years ago. It is considered to be our spirit, and our father. Our spirit is the root of our Consciousness. Our Spirit, our inner father, came from the Father. Om Satyam Param Dhimahi transforms all that we are in order that we may become all that we may be. It allows us to break free from the bindings and conditionings that hold us back, so that we may soar from the darkness, renewed, in order to embrace the light.

Vibrating Om Satyam Param Dhimahi will cause you to be rewarded in thousands of ways. There are no restrictions on how to meditate upon Om Satyam Param Dhimahi. It can be done at any time and in any space. Vibrate Om Satyam Param Dhimahi and connect to awaken the “I AM” within. It is the Lord whose name is I AM who awakes in you; and the moment the Lord awakes in you, you will feel liberated. When the “I AM” awakens, it is God who awakens. Our “I Am-ness” is our awareness; it is God. Let us vibrate Om Satyam Param Dhimahi with intense devotion, so as to feel the omnipresence in the mind and body. Om Satyam Param Dhimahi will give you the spiritual strength needed to overcome any challenge. We can send Light to a troubled area of the world by meditating with Om Satyam Param Dhimahi in a group. Indeed, joining our energy to help restore harmony and bring relief through our heartfelt prayer will prove very beneficial for any region in need of healing. Om Satyam Param Dhimahi will cause you to merge with Divine Truth and Divine Knowledge, so that the light of Divinity may shine through you. Vibrate Om Satyam Param Dhimahi for a minimum of 11 minutes with a few minutes of silence before and after. You will be connected to all of the spiritual teachers and saints from the beginning of universal creation. Om Satyam Param Dhimahi is a mantra of purification, connection, and enlightenment. Let us meditate on Om Satyam Param Dhimahi, so that the effulgence of the divine Sun may infuse our being.
