Scientific Breakthrough in Music and Cancer Research
Neuroscientists at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City have used music from the Healing Beyond Medicine Music series created by Dr. Joseph Michael Levry to reduce pain in children being treated for a rare form of cancer, subsequently reducing the need for larger doses of medication during treatment. These pilot findings were so substantial that the study was recently published in the Journal of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology and an additional grant was issued for continued study. The results of this extraordinary research were presented at a 2018 East Hampton event hosted by actress and supermodel Carolyn Murphy, the founder of Equinox Fitness Clubs Lavinia Errico, and celebrity hair colorist Michael Canalé. The event was also attended by actor and environmentalist, Adrian Grenier.
Mahuiddin Ahmed PhD, shared the results of this research on the power of sound meditation:
“In a small pilot study at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, my colleague Dr. Sonia Sequeira and I have shown that the sound meditation found in Naam can be used to provide acute pain relief in children undergoing experimental cancer treatments and to significantly reduce the need for pain medication. With these encouraging results, we now have a grant from the hospital to conduct a first of its kind randomized controlled trial to see how these same techniques can affect pain, anxiety and outcome for pediatric patients undergoing major surgeries as part of their cancer care.”
One of the tracks used in the study contains an ancient combination of healing sounds precisely arranged with the therapeutic melody of Pachelbel’s Canon. The classical Canon was discovered to have a perfectly symmetrical geometric pattern by Alissa Crans, associate professor of mathematics at Loyola Marymount University, for which she won the National Merten M. Hasse Prize1. Fascinatingly, this type of symmetry can be found in nature, from the shape of a snowflake, to the body of a starfish and even in the conformation of DNA molecules during protein synthesis. Furthermore, according to a study conducted at the Monash University in Australia, the simple act of listening to Pachelbel’s Canon completely prevented increases in anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate in the midst of being exposed to cognitive stressors2. Preliminary findings based on the work of Dr. Goldberger of Harvard Medical School also suggest that patients’ heart rhythms became more organized and improved after listening to this healing melody3. What is unique is that Dr. Levry’s unique musical formula magnifies the healing benefits of Pachelbel’s Canon using sacred words and melodic elements, that contain mathematically defined tones and meter, thereby creating a totally new musical combination that directly supports the healing process in a very powerful way.
Another beautiful and unique recording with the sacred words I Am I Am was also used in the Memorial Sloan Kettering study. The power of I Am as a tool for meditation and self-improvement has been extensively spoken about by Joel Osteen, Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, the late Wayne Dyer, Oprah and many other visionaries.4,5,6,7,8 I Am is written about in the first 5 books of the Old Testament and the spiritual literature of the Torah. I Am is the Name the Creator gave to Moses and told him, “This is my Name Forever, the Name by which I shall be known for all future generations.”
Without question, medical, mathematical and scientific research demonstrates that this combination of music, vowel sounds and tones has a tremendous healing impact upon the listener. This groundbreaking research transforms hope into healing. It offers us a glimpse into a future where we will be able to administer musical remedies just as we prescribe medicine today.
Fortunately, you do not have to wait for the future. You can start using the exact scientifically proven musical compositions applied in the Memorial Sloan Kettering study now to support your overall health and wellbeing. Just imagine the healing potential of this music for you, your family and your friends.
